A reserve tanker and a brush truck were demolished when a pickup truck going more than 100 mph struck Ellinwood Fire Department's station.

A pickup truck crashed into a Kansas fire station, destroying two pieces of apparatus

The accident happened shortly before midnight at the Ellinwood Fire Department's station, according to police. A pickup was traveling more than 100 mph when it struck the station, KSNW-TV reports.

Following the impact, the truck caught fire, and the driver, Dustin Lee Jahay, was trapped inside, the police said.

“We got the fire extinguished rather soon, and then, we had to extricate, took about 20 minutes to extricate the subject in the pickup,” Ellinwood Fire Chief Chris Komarek told KSNW.

A brush truck and a reserve tanker were destroyed in the accident. The station also sustained heavy damage, and the department is expected to be without the building for at least six months.

“Actually, we have three brush trucks, so we’ll be down to two now. We’ll probably be able to manage on that,” Komarek told KSNW. “We have good mutual aid with surrounding departments.”

Jahay was taken to a Wichita hospital with a broken hip. The crash is under investigation.
