Firefighters are urging a Florida city to add more stations in an effort to keep up with the rapidly growing area.
“I’m tired of talking. Let’s get some work done," Joe Greco, the head of Tampa's firefighters union, told the city council Thursday, according to WFTS-TV. "Stop consulting and address the problems that we have."
Greco pointed to the city's Channelside area as an example of growth outpacing the department's current layout of stations. He asked the city to add two fire stations there in order to help improve response times.
Lawmakers agreed that the city needs more stations. But coming up with $32 million to pay for them is another matter.
“We're gonna have to have new trucks, new personnel, new stations. How do we explain to our constituents that it’s going to cost money?" Commissioner Joseph Citro said at Thursday's meeting, according to WFTS.
Tampa's 9-1-1 dispatch receives 1.1 million calls annually, and that is expected to grow in the coming years.
