Rosenbauer Motors has added the Dana 35,000-pound rear axle as an option to its popular Commander custom fire chassis. The previous heaviest rear axle option was 33,000 pounds.
The addition of the 35,000-pound Dana axle provides fire departments with the ability to have more flexibility in apparatus configurations including a 100-foot Viper straight stick on a single axle.
This allows for a shorter wheelbase enhancing maneuverability. The heavier axle enables departments to carry heavy duty rescue equipment and/or a larger water capacity tank.
The first Rosenbauer apparatus using the Dana 35,000-pound rear axle option is the city of Cincinnati. Cincinnati chose the new option to create a shorter wheelbase aerial truck making operating a typically longer apparatus safer for the crew.
“Dana’s axle enhances Rosenbauer’s commitment to our customers to meet their needs through options that make fire apparatus safer for the crew," said Dan Van Alten, Chief of Engineering for Rosenbauer Motors.
