FL Ambulance Stolen from Hospital as Medics Drop off Patient

A 29-year-old man drove off with the Hernando County Fire & Emergency Services rig while it was parked in the ambulance bay of a Brooksville hospital

A Florida man is accused of stealing a fire department's ambulance while it was parked outside a hospital Sunday.

The Hernando County Fire & Emergency Services ambulance was at the Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to the Herando County Sheriff's Office. Medics were inside the hospital to drop off a patient when the rig was stolen from the facility's ambulance bay.

A man identified as Trey Cornwell, 29, was driving the stolen ambulance in the direction of a nearby body of water when it became stuck in sand and mud. According to witnesses, Cornwell then abandoned the ambulance and fled toward a shopping plaza before he was eventually was apprehended.

Cornwell was arrested and charged with grand theft auto. He was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center, where he is being held on $10,000 bond.

No information was given concerning any damage the ambulance sustained in the incident.
