Mt. Morris Township firefighters are rallying to support their fire chief, seriously injured in a crash involving their ambulance last week.

Fire Chief Elmer Wilson, who suffered multiple back and neck fractures, has a long road to recovery, WNEM reported.

The ambulance was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado that failed to stop at a stop sign, according to Michigan State Police.

The 21-year-old driver was charged with disregarding a stop sign.

“I’m doing as good as expected. I’m in the hospital at Hurley. I have eight fractures in my back and two fractures in my neck,” Wilson wrote in an e-mail to firefighters Saturday.

After spinal surgery, he was placed on a ventilator after suffering a collapsed lung and pneumonia.

On Monday, he was removed from the ventilator.

Wilson, who has spent more than 40 years at the department, was headed to the station for training when the collision occurred.
