A resident of Montreal has started a petition on Change.org to memorialize fallen Montreal firefighter Pierre Lacroix.
Lacroix died on Oct. 17 when he became stuck beneath a rescue boat that capsized in the Lachine Rapids during rescue operations on the St. Lawrence River that saved two lives.
Montreal resident Alexandra Lajeunesse is working to have bike and pedestrian paths that parallel the north boarder of the St. Lawrence River named the Sentier Pierre-Lacroix after the fallen firefighter. The paths run through the boroughs of LaSalle, Lachine and Verdun near the Lachine Rapids where Lacroix perished in service to his community.
The memorial would also recognize Lacroix’s fellow firefighters who went into the water and were hauled to shore with the other victims after their boat capsized. The Montreal Gazette reported that as of Thursday morning over 10,700 signatures have been added to the petition to honor of Lacroix and his colleagues.
