- Directs and supervises daily departmental operations, including fire prevention, education, rescue, suppression, and related activities
- Assists in communicating the department’s vision, mission, and philosophy
- Reviews reports and oversees the training of subordinates and volunteers
- Conducts performance evaluations and provides performance counseling
- Offers guidance to subordinate supervisors on staff management and technical fire programs
- Ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of all activities within the department
- Assists the Deputy Chief with scheduling and leave approval
- Schedules training sessions and coordinates vehicle maintenance programs
- Purchases class A uniforms, station uniforms, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other departmental supplies
- Assists the Chief with budget development by obtaining prices and identifying needs

- Supervises and participates in fire prevention and education programs, as well as other departmental activities

- Participates in all aspects of calls for service, including service calls, rescue calls, and fire suppression activities

- Works with career staff to ensure seamless integration with the volunteer workforce
- Serves in the absence of the Fire Chief when designated

- Thorough knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, applicable federal, state, and local laws pertaining to fire service industry

Physical Requirements
This is hazardous physical labor that requires exerting over one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, up to fifty (50) pounds frequently, and up to twenty (20) pounds constantly to move objects. The work involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is needed to express or exchange ideas verbally, while hearing is necessary to perceive information at normal spoken levels. Visual acuity is required for tasks such as color and depth perception, peripheral vision, analyzing written or computer data, operating a motor vehicle or equipment, inspecting defects or small parts, and assessing the accuracy and thoroughness of work. Additionally, the worker must be able to observe general surroundings and activities. The worker will be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, gases, and bloodborne pathogens. Personal protective equipment and a self-contained breathing apparatus will be required at times.
Working Conditions
Employee is exposed to both inside and outside working conditions in all types of weather from extremes of cold and heat to rain/snow/ice as well as varying terrain from streets, dense foliage, dark buildings and water.
Desirable Education

Experience
Eight (8) years of progressively responsible positions in the fire service with at least five (5) years in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
- Possession a valid North Carolina class B driver’s license
- Possession of a North Carolina Firefighter II certificate
- Possession of a North Carolina EMT-B certificate
- Possession of Driver Operator-Pumps and Aerials certification or completion of Fire Department Approved Driver Operator equivalent
- Possession of ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, IS-700, IS-800 certifications
- Possession of North Carolina Hazmat Operation certifications or equivalent
- Possession of Fire Inspector Level III certification
- Possession of other appropriate certifications that may be required by the Town
- Must reside within 2 miles of the Southern Shores town boundaries. Must work on-call duties as assigned
- Shall carry a department issued pager and respond to Station Alarms and Structure Fire alarms when/if possible
