Retired FDNY Firefighter Creates Fence to Honor 9/11 Victims

Joseph Napoli still sees the faces of loved ones peering through the fence that surrounded Ground Zero

A retired FDNY member hopes a living art display he created will help people who lost loved ones on 9/11.

Joseph Napoli knew what he was going to create when the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage approached him. It would be a fence.

He told ABC7 he knew it was time to face his darkest memories of working the pile after the attacks

"That's my memory of Ground Zero - that fence," he said adding that he always dreaded walking by the fence because behind it he would see the worried faces of people looking for their missing loved ones. "Walking past that fence, it just ripped my heart out every time."

His fence is graced with flowers, American flags, Beanie Babies and pictures of people missing -- just like it was 21 years ago.

Pictures of four people who died in the attacks who Napoli knew personally or who were family members of close friends are included in his work.
