Firefighters putting out a blaze in a St. Paul senior living community early Friday found a person dead inside the apartment unit.

The St. Paul fire department responded about 3:45 a.m. to a report of smoke in the first floor hallway of an apartment building in the 900 block of Como Boulevard East. Crews arrived to find moderate smoke coming from an apartment in the senior living community for ages 55 and older.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and found a person dead inside the unit during a search, according to the St. Paul fire department.

St. Paul Police are investigating the death, which can’t be ruled a fire fatality until all investigations are complete. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

If ruled a fire fatality, this would be the fifth fire fatality of 2025. The city averages two to three annually, according to the St. Paul fire department.
