Body Found Four Days after Fire in Jefferson Township, OH
In addition to grief, a Jefferson Township family is angry and searching for answers - lots of them - after the remains of their loved one wasn't found right after a house fire.
A home on Calumet Lane was gutted by fire on Oct. 2. One of the residents was unaccounted for, and at least two searches of debris conducted by firefighters proved fruitless.
With the man still missing, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office asked for another and during that one - four days after the fire -- a man's body was found in what remained of the house, WDTN reported.
While positive identification has not been made, the family suspects it's the father, 30, of two daughters, 6 and 7.
“There was a person in there. I don’t care if the embers are going to fly. When you show up and say somebody’s in a home, you guys got to do something,” said Michael Varhelyi, who believes his nephew's body was recovered.
Jefferson Township Fire Chief Gregory Wilcox defended razing the house as it posed a danger.
Wilcox also said that a body being discovered days later in a fire is far from unheard of.
“It can happen. Just the amount of…the structure, the debris.”
State fire investigators are investigating.
