Canby officials asked residents and businesses near an industrial facility to evacuate Tuesday afternoon because of a “presumed gas explosion.”

Firefighters responded to the potential explosion at Kittyhawk, a company that uses “high heat and pressure” to process materials including metal, according to its website.

The company uses argon gas, said Sam Khieu, public information officer for Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, which sent a hazmat team to Canby to help local firefighters.

A “potential explosion” inside the facility caused a fire that destroyed part of the building’s roof, Khieu said.

A Clackamas County alert system issued a Level 3 (go now) evacuation for the area immediately surrounding the business at 301 South Redwood St. just after 4 p.m. Tuesday warning of “hazardous materials.”

Canby Fire reported on 9-1-1 app PulsePoint that all employees made it out of the business. It said surrounding areas would be evacuated out of “an abundance of caution.”
