Chemical Leak Prompts Evacuations in Toledo, OH

Toledo firefighters also issued a shelter-in-place early Wednesday due to the leaking tank of glycidyl methacrylate.

A hazardous chemical spill near the Ohio- Michigan border in Toledo has prompted officials to evacuate some residents on the city's north side.

The released chemical is an irritant that can cause burning of the eyes, nose, mouth, and skin, according to authorities. Symptoms of overexposure include headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting.

Toledo officials have also issued a shelter-in-place order for other residents near the area.

City fire officials ordered residents within a mile radius of 1050 Progress Avenue at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday to evacuate because hazardous materials were released, according to a statement.

"The release is ongoing, and crews continue to monitor the situation," the officials said.

Residents who had to evacuate were directed to temporary shelter at a nearby elementary school or a nearby store parking lot where vehicles are stationed to provide shelter.

Early Wednesday, authorities ordered residents within a three-mile radius of the site to shelter in place. The order requires residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, turn off ventilation that draws in outside air, and keep pets indoors.

City officials said no injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with the incident. They also said there was no explosion, only a release of a hazardous chemical.
