'Mayday, Mayday, Send Everyone,' Trapped Syracuse, NY, Cop Calls at Fire
Syracuse, N.Y. — A fire ripped through a Syracuse home early Thursday, killing a 2-year-old boy and critically injuring another boy and a woman, authorities said.
The injured boy was pulled out of the home at 622-624 Jamesville Ave. with no pulse and given CPR in the street, said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds. The boy had a pulse at the hospital, he said.
“We hope and pray that (child’s) doing better,” the chief said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with that family.”
A woman living on the second floor was pulled out of the home and given immediate medical care by firefighters and AMR staff, Monds said. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
A man got out of the second-floor apartment on his own, but he suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital, Monds said. Two other adults from the apartment were taken to a hospital, he said.
Firefighters found the boy who died while searching the second-floor apartment for victims, Monds said.
Three police officers also were taken to local hospitals, Monds said. Two firefighters were also injured, he said.
The fire was reported at 1:43 a.m.
A caller told 911 the house was on fire and two boys were trapped inside an upstairs bedroom.
The 2½-story house was reported fully engulfed by fire when police and firefighters arrived.
“Mayday! Mayday!” a police officer told dispatchers just minutes after the fire was reported. “Send everyone!”
The officer told dispatchers to send multiple ambulances. Dispatchers reported there were multiple victims.
At least one police officer made it into the house, Monds said. The officer suffered burns and smoke inhalation.
Firefighters rushed into the home to get to the second-floor apartment because they were getting reports of children trapped, Monds said. They fought the fire and crawled on their bellies searching for the victims, he said.
There was only one stairwell in and out of the second-floor apartment, Monds said. That stairwell opened up in the kitchen where the fire was heavy, he said.
Three people — the boy who died and the boy and woman who were critically injured — couldn’t make it out of the second-floor apartment on their own, the chief said.
The stairwell blocked by fire made it difficult for anyone in the second-floor apartment to get out, Monds said.
The fire spread from the kitchen to the attic and rapidly spread in the second floor, the chief said.
Monds said it was heroic how the police officers and firefighters rushed inside the home to try to get to people.
There were working smoke detectors that officials believe alerted everybody about the fire, Monds said.
The property was a two-family house with seven people living downstairs and six people living upstairs, Monds said.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, officials said.
