Arson Suspected in Idaho Potato Plant Fire

Oct. 24--BURLEY --Arson is suspected in the weekend fire that destroyed about half of an old potato processing plant on West Main Street in Burley.

Cassia County Sheriff Randy Kidd said Monday that sheriff's investigators are interviewing two suspects today regarding the fire that broke out about 11:40 p.m. Friday. Firefighters from several departments were called to assist Burley firefighters stop the blaze.

According to the Cassia County Assessor's Office, the building, which once belonged to J.R. Simplot Co., is owned by High Desert Milk.

Burley Fire Chief Keith Martin says fire investigators believe the blaze was started in the southeast corner of the building and travelled about halfway through the structure before it was halted.

Martin said the sheriff's office received about four reports of youth running from the building shortly before the fire was reported.
