NEW HAVEN, Conn. --

New Haven firefighters battled two fires less than a mile apart that began within minutes of one another Tuesday night.

The first fire was reported at about 11:30 p.m. at a multi-family home on the corner of Howard and Third streets.

"A pregnant woman had to be removed by firefighters, taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation," said New Haven Fire Department Battalion Chief John King.

Members of the American Red Cross said the organization was helping eight people -- five adults and three children -- displaced int he fire.

Two minutes later, a fire was reported at a multi-family home on Ella Grasso Boulevard. The home was vacant and is located less than a mile from the first fire.

King said it is unusual for two fires to begin in close proximity and time. He said it is too early to determine if the fires are related.
