HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) -- A woman whose four children died in a house fire in February set the blaze, police said Wednesday.

Marie Auguste, 43, died last month while being treated for burns from the fire that killed four of her children, ages 6 months to 17 years old. A 13-year-old son survived the Feb. 15 blaze.

Auguste deliberately locked her 6-month-old child in a bedroom, set the house on fire with gasoline and walked to the rear door, said Hialeah Police Chief Rolando Balanos. She was confronted at the door by her surviving son, he said.

``We wish we would have had an opportunity to formally charge the subject and perhaps that would have put closure on it from our perspective,'' he said. ``But the facts are what they are.''

A 6-year-old girl who died in the fire was the recipient of a more than $1 million malpractice award three years ago.

Police have said Auguste could be removed as an heir, making her two surviving sons ineligible for any of the girl's estate.
