An elderly couple and their two young step-grandchildren were killed in a house fire late Sunday night near Rover, Tenn.

Leon "Bubba" McClaran, 72, his wife Molli McClaran, 70, Chloe Pope, 9 and Gage "Buster" Daniels, 7, perished in the blaze on Kingdom Road that was reported around 10:30 p.m., according to The Shelbyville Times-Gazette.

The home, which sits at the end of a gravel pathway several hundred yards off the road, was engulfed in flames when it was spotted by a passerby.

Only a few of the home's walls were standing by the time Unionville firefighters arrived.

Officials say firefighters were forced to watch the home burn at first due to a lack of hydrants and access to apparatus.

Crew ultimately set up a plastic water trough near the fire in order to battle the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
