Residents in one of San Diego’s southern-most neighborhoods benefited from a holiday meal giveaway this past weekend at San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Station 29, located in the neighborhood of San Ysidro.
Bomberos de San Diego and San Diego firefighters gave away food, toys, candy and Christmas trees to over 200 deserving families, who were selected from local elementary schools.
Those who had been invited to attend and benefit from the event began forming a line outside the fire station long before the event began. Each person or family received canned goods, stuffing, potatoes, a turkey or ham, and a Christmas tree, if it was needed. Children in the group also received fire helmets, candy and toys.
Bomberos de San Diego has an extensive history with the food giveaways, which have taken place for over 20 years on the Saturday before Christmas.
It is a community outreach organization; whose members represent various fire agencies throughout San Diego County. The philanthropic group gives back to the community throughout the year by way of scholarships, toy and food drives along with training and outfitting firefighters in Mexico.
