According to WABC 7, the fire broke out in a Euclid Avenue building in Cypress Hills just before midnight Sunday. Heavy smoke spread through the building with many residents using fire escapes to get fresh air.

The television station reported that FDNY transported 19 residents for medical care and police officers transported and additional 10 victims in cruisers to Jamaica Medical Center.

None of the residents suffered injuries that were thought to be life threatening.

WABC reported that the cause of the fire may have been a battery on an electric wheelchair.
