Video Shows Likely Cause of MI Clubhouse Fire

March 18, 2022
A surveillance video from the Oakland Hills Country Club shows the possible cause of a fire that destroyed the historic building.

Officials presented a surveillance video to reporters showing workers using a torch during construction, which may have led to the fire that destroyed the clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club.

The video shows workers using a propane torch, then grabbing a garden hose spraying water, and then firefighters opening up a wall with fire and smoke pushing out.

"There is still a lot of investigation and interviews to do, but this gives us a good idea where this started and went up the wall,” Bloomfield Township Fire Chief John LeRoy told The Detroit News.

Officials pointed out that the findings were “not conclusive” and are working to establish a timeline for the fire that caused $80 million in damage.

Investigators expect a preliminary investigative report in April and said it could be a year before a final report is issued.
