An elderly MO couple was killed after an intense overnight house fire at their home near New Melle.
Firefighters found heavy fire in the rear of the house as they approached the area about 12:40 a.m., Fox2 reported..
The husband told the 911 dispatcher there was a fire in the house. He added that his wife was on the floor and he was not going to leave her. Both were 84.
“Our crews battled 100% and forced with heavy fire conditions and collapsed conditions. We were forced to retreat and got right back in as soon as they could find other means to get there,” New Melle Assistant Fire Chief Chad Wagner told reporters.
The cause is under investigation.
