IN Woman Jailed for Refusing to Evacuate Building

March 11, 2023
Evansville firefighters said the building was filling with smoke from a dumpster fire.

A woman who refused to leave an apartment building as it was filling with smoke will be staying elsewhere for the next 60 days -- behind bars.

Evansville firefighters evacuated residents Thursday when smoke from a dumpster blew into the trash chute and throughout the structure, WEHT reported.

But, Tia C. Franz didn't want to leave and walked by firefighters, ignoring their repeated requests.

She made it to the staircase on the second floor. Franz pulled away from a police officer attempting to get her to leave.

On Friday, Franz pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct, refusing to leave an emergency incident area and resisting.

The judge sentenced her to 60 days in Vanderburgh County Jail.

Firefighters allowed residents to go back inside after three hours.
