"No one likes a crying baby but we love crying babies. Crying babies are awesome."
Laughing, St. Louis Paramedic/Firefighter Cody Carpenter said that delightful sound brought instant relief.
It happened in May in the front seat of a police SUV as Carpenter worked to revive a five-month-old boy left lifeless as a tornado blew through the area, Fox2 reported.
The frantic mother flagged down firefighters who were stuck on debris-littered streets that were clogged by traffic.
“She was holding the baby. She and the baby were lifted into the air approximately 5 ft. Then, she fell onto the child and subsequently fell a couple of more times onto the child because of the other winds around her,” Carpenter told reporters.
As he tried to keep the baby breathing, another firefighter flagged down St. Louis Police Detective William Triplett, who was looking for his wife and grandson.
“The angels were definitely with us," the detective recalled. "Over the sidewalks … through traffic, trees.”
He snaked his way toward the hospital, sometimes going the wrong way on an interstate where traffic was at a near standstill.
It was like something out of a movie.
“The kiddo started to move a little bit more, had a couple of cries. No one likes a crying baby but we love crying babies. Crying babies are awesome,” Carpenter said.
