A volunteer firefighter who rescued an elderly man from a blazing house didn't know until they were outside that the victim had a good reason for not being able to find the door. He is blind.

Tray Ross, 20, who works at a chicken plant in Gainesville, told reporters at Channel 2 Action News he crawled on his stomach looking for the victim.

He told reporters the heat from the flames burned the inside of his nose as he inhaled. But he pushed through, listening for the man, and shouting directions to help rescue him.

“I was crawling, and I finally grabbed his ankle and whenever he grabbed my hand, I stood up and picked him up. I said, ‘I’m going to get you out of here,’ and he said, ‘That sounds great.’ I carried him to the front door,” Ross told Channel 2.

It was then that the firefighter learned the man was blind.
