Ala. Duplex Fire Destroys Home, Family Escapes

A fire destroyed a duplex in Troy Monday afternoon, but all five people inside were able to make it out safely, according to The Troy Messenger.A woman, her three children and her mother were watching a movie in the bottom apartment of the duplex at 436 Elm Street when they heard a sudden pop.One of the children ran through the home yelling "fire, fire."The family escaped the flames by exiting the rear of the home.

A woman, her three children and her mother were watching a movie in the bottom apartment of the duplex at 436 Elm Street when they heard a sudden pop.

One of the children ran through the home yelling "fire, fire."

The family escaped the flames by exiting the rear of the home.

The woman told the newspaper that the fire began in her son's bedroom.

The fire began at approximately 3 p.m. and the unit was fully engulfed by 4:15 p.m.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading from trees outside the home.
