An off-duty Lincoln firefighter used a garden hose to extinguish a fire in his neighborhood last night (Aug. 11), according to The Lincoln Journal Star.

Firefighter Lamar Reil was working in his yard in the Stone Bridge Creek neighborhood when he noticed smoke coming from down the street.

He jumped into his truck and as he drove toward the smoke saw that the back porch of a duplex was on fire.

Reil grabbed a garden hose and used it to knock down the flames until his fellow firefighters arrived on the scene.

Battalion Chief Dean Staberg told the newspaper that if Reil hadn't kept the fire in check, the building could have been destroyed.

There was no one inside the unit that caught and a dog and guinea pigs inside were unharmed. Residents of the other unit were able to get outside safely.

The damage was estimated at about $50,000 and the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
