St. Louis Sues State of Missouri Over New Firefighter Residency Law

The City of St. Louis has filed a lawsuit against the State of Missouri over a new law that would allow firefighters to live outside of the city limits after seven years of service.

The City of St. Louis has filed a lawsuit against the State of Missouri over a new law that would allow firefighters to live outside of the city limits, according to KMOX Radio.

Governor Jay Nixon signed a bill into law last week that would allow the city's firefighters to live outside the city's limits after seven years of service starting on Aug. 20.

The city's charter requires all city employees to live in the city.

According to KWMU Radio, police officers received the right to live outside of the city in 2005.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay urged Nixon not to sign the measure but understands that firefighters used every option available to loosen the residency restrictions, spokeswoman Kara Bowlin said.

"What it really comes down to is it's not the governor's place," she said. "It is the people of St. Louis and probably the mayor's place to sign this bill if anyone is signing it."

The case was filed in Cole County court yesterday and no court date has been scheduled.
