HOUSTON --

A three-alarm fire broke out at a north Houston apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, destroying 48 units.

Fire officials were sent to the Driscoll Place complex at 1303 Gears at Greensmark shortly after 2:30 p.m. The fire continued to burn more than two hours later.

Heavy smoke and flames shot through the roof. Fire officials said the blaze began in an attic and spread to two buildings.

Thirty-seven families were displaced by the fire, officials said. The Greater Houston Area Red Cross said it is assisting those families with their immediate needs. The complex is helping them find temporary homes.

One firefighter suffered injuries to his eye from the debris and smoke. No one else was injured.

Complex officials said all residents evacuated safely.

The apartment complex was built in 1982. It has 488 units.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
