Six members of the station were alerted to the blaze, which occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. at the firehouse on Falcon Road.

Crews discovered heavy smoke on the apparatus floor after entering the station. A sprinkler system activated and contained the fire while firefighters used a hand line to put out the remainder of the fire.

A 1990 Ford Darley fire engine -- a reserve unit for the department -- was declared a total loss. There are no immediate plans to replace the engine.

Eight other vehicles in the station were not damaged.

Chief Derek Bergsten told the newspaper that the fire is believed to have been started by an electrical short.
