To honor the commitment and heroism of Americaâs public safety officers, Congress created the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor through the passage of the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act of 2001. The medal is awarded each year by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life.

If you know a firefighter, emergency services officer, or other public safety officer who in the past year has gone above and beyond the call of duty and exhibited exceptional courage, decisiveness, and unusual swiftness of action in an attempt to save or protect human life, visit www.ojp.usdoj.gov/medalofvalor/ to learn how to nominate this person for the Medal of Valor.
