FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --

A fire at a Fort Lauderdale high-rise condominium Monday night forced several residents out of their homes and sent a firefighter to the hospital.

It happened just before 8 p.m. in the penthouse of the Tides condominium at 3020 NE 32nd Ave.

Residents evacuated when the alarm sounded and the sprinkler system turned on. Water from that system turned out to be the cause of most of the damage, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

Seven units sustained the worst water damage. People living in them had to find another place to stay for the night while crews worked to secure the area. According to investigators, water seeped into electrical fixtures and firefighters didn't want to take any chances.

No one in the building was injured, but a firefighter was transported to Holy Cross Hospital with a muscle injury and dehydration. He is expected to be OK.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
