JACKSON, Miss. --

The Jackson Fire Department is investigating a church building fire.

Officials said the Social Ministry of Church of Prayer on Silas Brown Street and Walnut Street caught fire around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

16 WAPT was told the building was not a sanctuary but rather a building the church owned.

Firefighters said they had a rough time putting the fire out because it continued to flare up after they doused the flames out.

One neighbor said he has seen "squatters" living in the building.

Firefighters didn't find anyone inside when they searched the structure.

The building was total loss. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused the blaze.
