KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
Lightning from a storm system that rolled through Kansas City early Tuesday morning is blamed for several fires.
One of those fires happened at the American Inn at Interstate 70 and Noland Road.
A man driving by saw lightning hit the neon sign on top of the motel. He stopped and alerted the front desk, and then helped wake guests to get them out of the motel.
Fire crews quickly put out the fire. No injuries were reported.
In Lenexa, Kan., firefighters were called to 81st Street and Lackman Road after a house caught fire after a lightning strike.
The homeowner said he heard lightning and when he went to check, he saw smoke in an upstairs bathroom.
One firefighter was taken to a hospital for exhaustion.
In Overland Park, Kan., fire crews made quick work of another fire caused by lightning at 127th and Cody streets.
The fire was contained to the roof and there was not much damage.
No one was hurt. KMBC reported that the family was allowed to stay in their home.
