Baltimore City firefighters responded to an apartment fire early Tuesday evening.

The fire started around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Ashburton Apartments in northwest Baltimore. Most residents said by the time they smelled smoke, it was too late to get out the front door.

Some residents said they had to jump from balconies, while others said they were rescued by firefighters on ladders.

The blaze damaged seven apartments. The fire department said neighborhood services is helping those displaced families find a temporary place to stay.
