City fire crews had to deal with more than just the flames at an apartment fire on 2nd Street on Thursday night.
Firefighters responded to the Chester Village Town Homes, where there was a small fire. But what caused more problems was Lisa Ann White, who was inside the burning unit and refused to leave. Police eventually arrested her on suspicion of assault and battery on a fireman while he was trying to do his job.
"When we've got people fighting us, we've got to make sure our people are safe but also maintain focus to isolate and confine the fire ... which we did," said Bakersfield Fire Department Batallion Chief Matt Moore.
Officials said they were able to quickly extinguish the two small fires in an upstairs bedroom. They are calling the fire suspicious.
Damage is estimated at $12,000.
