WASHINGTON - It's not every day you see firefighters in full gear run down the street like Olympic athletes, but it happened Friday in Columbia Heights.

They were after an arson suspect.

D.C. firefighter Kenneth Humphries says Engine 4 was on Columbia Road near 9th Street putting out a series of fires.

"The sergeant saw him (the suspect) set the third dumpster on fire. The sergeant saw him and we had a couple witnesses outside," he says.

"If we weren't there, it would have went into the house. It had burn marks all up and down the house."

The firefighters caught up to the suspect.

"We sat on his mid-section to keep him down and we kind of held his arms and things down, you know, so he wouldn't swing on us."

Firefighters held the suspect down until the police arrived.

And Humphries admits it's not something for which firefighters are trained.

"Sometimes you have to do things outside the call of duty."
