The alarm sounded at 0739 hours and Richmond firefighters responded to a rapidly spreading structure fire at 3533 Grove Ave on April 18, 2006.
One resident suffered some burns when she attempted to re-enter the structure. Richmond Ambulance Authority Medics provided aid and the patient went to her private physican for further treatment.
One firefighter, who has not been identified, suffered a ground level fall during the firefighting operation and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital after complaining of rib and side pain. The injuries are not believed to be serious.
During a search of the structure Richmond's Bravest discovered two felines in the smoke filled, burning building. The firefighters quickly removed the resident's pets to safety. One of the cats was suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken to a vet. Both felines are believed to be okay thanks to Richmond's Bravest quick work.
Lt. Keith Vida said that on the first alarm responding units included Quints 18, 12, 6 and 10. Rescue 2 and Battalion 2 also responded.
Upon accessment of the growing blaze a second alarm was sounded. The second alarm summoned Quints 19 and 20 along with Rescue 1.
The two story structure which was divided into apartments proved to be a challenge.
Vida explained that the interior fire wasn't the worst of it. The challenge came when fire extended into and up the walls to an attic space. Vida said then walls had to pulled to enable firefighters to get to the fire.
The fire was marked under control at 0829 hours.
The cause is under investigation.
