The crane was near mile marker 48 when it burst into flames.

The crane's driver told authorities he smelled smoke and pulled over when he saw smoke coming from the engine. The driver was able to get out safely.

Broward Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene and doused the blaze.

Westbound lanes of Alligator Alley were closed for several minutes and one eastbound lane was closed when the fire apparently spread across the median.

Images from Chopper 6 showed charred grass on both sides of the highway.

All lanes had reopened by about 11 a.m.
