A volunteer firefighter who helped collect money for a local children's charity is now accused of stealing it.

A grand jury indicted David Simmons, 32, on charges that he stole a safe from the Nichols Fire Department in Bullitt County in 2003, WLKY NewsChannel 32 reported Thursday.

It contained nearly $6,000 that was supposed to go to the Crusade For Children.

"You've got somebody you can supposedly trust, and then they go out and do something like that," Nichols Fire Chief W.D. Coy said. "That makes you mad, real mad."

Police also have charged Johnny Sparks, Gordon Sparks and Gary Gerwitz for aiding in the alleged heist, WLKY reported.

Police said the group spent some of the money to buy methamphetamine.
