Virginia Firefighter Survives Fall During Collapse

The two-story brick residential structure had heavy fire showing on A and B side from second floor.

Fire was raging through the structure. The alarm sounded dispatching City of Richmond's Bravest to what would prove a treacherous situation.

Quints, 10, 14, 15, 5, 16, R1, R2, B2 responded to a reported house fire at 2912 Northumberland on Oct 5.

Quint 10 was first on scene with Lt. Stowell taking initial command.

The two-story brick residential structure had heavy fire showing on A and B side from second floor. Q10 advanced a 1 3/4 hand line to the second floor with Q5 assisting in truck work. Q14 advance second line to first floor and R-2 advanced a third line to the attic. Q-16 was RIT. Chief Glidewell assumed command upon arrival.

Officials said all companies worked hard to contain the fire and gain control.

"A partial collapse of the second floor occurred during firefighting operations that sent one member of Rescue 1 falling down to the first floor," said Lt. Mike Oprandy of Richmond Fire and Emergency Services. "The firefighter was quickly located and transported to the hospital. The firefighter was treated and released with a bruised arm."

The structure was unoccupied at the time. The fire is under investigation.
