ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. --
Fire crews battled a multi-alarm blaze Sunday morning near the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. On Monday, investigators were still trying to figure out what caused the massive blaze.
The fire broke out at about 7:30 a.m. at the new Water Club Hotel Tower being built next to the Borgata. It began on the lower floors and worked its way upward.
"There's a breezeway from the old tower to the new tower. The fire apparently started on the roof of the breezeway and very, very rapidly ran up 40 floors," Capt. Mike Mooney of the Atlantic City Fire Dept.
A spokesperson for the Borgata said no one was injured in the fire or evacuated from the original Borgata hotel or casino, hotel spokespeople said. Although the building was locked down for a time.
The 43-story, $400-million Borgata expansion is under construction and set to open next year. Borgata spokespeople said it is too early to know whether it will open on time.
