Woman Found Ablaze on Oakland Street

Sept. 1, 2006
The woman is in serious condition.

Firefighters responding to a call early Friday came upon a gruesome discovery -- a woman hog-tied, badly beaten and rolling in a street engulfed in flames.

Authorities said they got a call about 5 a.m. from a neighbor who heard an altercation and saw a fire at 44th and Shafer. The blaze turned out to be the woman and not a structure. Firefighters immediately extinguished the woman and she was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

The victim -- who police say was badly beatened and hog-tied at her wrists and ankles -- was described as an African American female 30-40 years of age. Authorities said she had burns over about 70 percent of her body.

Police believe the attack took place in a parking lot between Park Day School and Studio One.

Few other details were immediately available. Oakland police were on the scene investigating the incident.
