Atlanta Mayor Vetoes Firefighters' Pay Raise

June 27, 2006
Police officers will get their salary hike.

Atlanta firefighters are plotting their next move now that Mayor Shirley Franklin vetoed a pay increase for the department.

Mayor Franklin released a statement saying she reviewed data and research before making her decision.

Last week, city council members approved a 3.5 percent increase for both police and firefighters.

Firefighters say they've battled for three years to get pay raises equal to those of police officers.

The mayor says the salary increase for the police department will help retain officers and attract new ones.

Currently there is a shortage of police officers in Atlanta.
