SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) -- The state fire marshal's office said a woman who was killed in a house fire Thursday morning had been smoking in bed.

The fire in Wallace and Gloria Holbrook's Cape Cod-style home on Gorham Road started around 5 a.m.

Wallace is 73 years old and Gloria is 74. Firefighters rescued both of them through a second floor window.

Their 45-year-old daughter Tammy was found at the bottom of the stairs on the first floor and died later, according to state Public Safety Department spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said the cause of death was smoke inhalation.

Wallace Holbrook was treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland and released. Gloria Holbrook was hospitalized for severe smoke inhalation.
