District 9 council candidate Jay McChord's Web site suggests citizens show their public safety employees just how much they appreciate them.

McChord's Web site provides a list of ways to appreciate police and fire department employees. Suggestions include: mowing their lawns, giving them tickets to events, taking them out to dinner, and having a kid's birthday party where you ask for baked goods instead of presents, then donate the edibles to firefighters.

When candidates such as McChord say we need to pay safety employees more, they have a point. But I've yet to meet a pie, however well-intentioned, that pays a utility bill.
