CHICAGO (AP) -- At least four people were injured when a fire broke out in a high-rise apartment building on the city's South Side, officials said.

The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in a 12th floor apartment of a 35-story building, said Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Cortez Trotter.

Fire officials took two people who were in the building and two fire fighters to area hospitals for smoke inhalation. Fire officials said the injuries did not appear to be critical.

About 40 people evacuated the building during the fire, which fire fighters were able to put out in about two hours, Trotter said.

The fire caused extensive damage to the 12th floor apartment and smoke damage to other parts of the building, fire officials said.

Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire Thursday.
