WTOP Audio: SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Fire destroyed three town homes and damaged a fourth, displacing nine people Wednesday morning.

The cause of the 7 a.m. fire in the 7,600 block of Southern Oak Drive is not known. One of the homeowners had reported a fire on a deck when the fire was first reported.

The three-alarm fire has been contained, Fairfax County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Mark Stone, told WTOP at 8:30 a.m.

About 75 firefighters remain on the scene.

Fairfax County Fire Department spokesman Dan Schmidt says the fire started in an interior town house and spread to two adjoining homes.

"We're trying to save as many of the adjoining town houses," Schmidt told WTOP before firefighters contained the blaze. "We're doing offensive and defensive operations."

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries but nobody who lives in the homes was hurt. The Red Cross is assisting the people whose homes were destroyed.

The smoke from the fire could be seen from Interstate 95 and did pose some traffic problems for rush hour commuters.
