Six residents of a private alcohol and drug treatment center were displaced by a three-alarm fire Sunday that heavily damaged the Amicus House while the clients were out at a meeting, a San Jose fire official said today.

Fire Capt. Alison Cabral said the fire was at a house built early last century at 466 S. Buena Vista Ave., near the Burbank area west of downtown.

The fire, which was reported at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, began in the basement and had spread through a furnace flue to the attic by the time the first firefighters arrived.

The basement, which was used for storage, also contained an office and some appliances, as well the furnace, none of which have been pinpointed as the origin off the blaze. Cabral said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

No one was hurt in the blaze at Amicus House, whose owner told the fire department that the five live-in clients and single staff resident would be moved to other facilities she owns in the area.

Damage was estimated at about $250,000.
