GREENVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Three people were killed in a house fire that an 8-year-old girl managed to escape early Thursday, authorities said.
The fire started about 4:45 a.m. CST, and firefighters were unable to put out the blaze before it gutted the home, Kentucky State Police Trooper Stu Recke said.
The bodies of the victims _ a husband and wife and the woman's 11-year-old son _ were found in a hallway leading to a back door in the house, Recke said.
The victims were identified as Tim Edwards, 44; Mary Edwards, 37; and Joseph Michael Zachery, Mary Edwards' son from a previous relationship, Recke said.
Elizabeth Zachery, Mary Edwards' 8-year-old daughter, escaped the fire without injury, Recke said. The girl told police her mother awakened her and led her out of the house before going back inside to rescue Joseph Zachery, Recke said.
The girl also told police that Tim Edwards arrived home about the time Mary Edwards went back into the house, Recke said. The girl said Tim Edwards told her to stay outside before he went inside, Recke said.
The girl was taken to Muhlenberg Community Hospital, where she was in good condition Thursday afternoon, a spokeswoman said.
Recke said investigators were still probing the cause of the fire and trying to pinpoint where it started.
