The stations could be paid for with proceeds from either a bond issue or a local-option sales tax, said Fire Chief Steve Havlik and David Zahn, public safety commissioner.
Specific locations for the stations have not been discussed, but Havlik said he would like one of the new stations to replace an existing one.
The Wiley Boulevard station was on the edge of the city when it was built, Havlik said, ``and as the city grows, so do our run times.''
A plan showed three-bay firehouses of 7,500 to 9,000 square feet, including firefighters' living quarters and a community room.
The cost could vary depending on the location, Havlik said, but he estimated $1.5 million per station.
The plan doesn't call for additional staff, fire trucks or other equipment, Havlik said.
